About

Mindbenders is a blog dedicated to mind-bending stories in cinema, television, and books.  Occasionally there might be a game review tossed in here as well, but the primary focus will be on the aforementioned forms of entertainment.

A Mad Tea Party

Ever since my youth, mind-benders have fascinated me.  It began at an early age, with an interest in Lewis Carroll’s books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.  My mother read these to me at an early age, and I insisted she read them again and again.

Later, when I learned to read for myself, I re-read the works of Lewis Carroll several more times.  I also fell in love with the fantasy fiction available for children at the time, especially the works of Roald Dahl and Madeleine L’Engle.  Later still, though I was still quite young, I began to read similar works of fiction for adults.  My first introductions to adult books were Edgar Allan Poe, Isaac Asimov, and Ray Bradbury.  I dove into the realms of horror and science fiction, gobbling up books one after another.

Nothing could quench my thirst for a good story that blew my mind, it seemed.  I also became fascinated with Star Trek, and early science fiction films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Planet of the Apes.  And then came Star Wars, of course!

As an adult, my tastes became more developed, and it became those truly mind-bending stories that captured my interest most of all.  I read books by Philip K. Dick, Theodore Sturgeon, and Robert Anton Wilson.   I dove into movies by Brian DePalma, David Lynch, Roman Polanski, and David Cronenberg.

Now, I have been watching, reading and enjoying thinking about such films for several decades.  I have seen so many films and television programs, and read so many novels and short stories, that I can’t remember many of them!

This blog will provide reviews of mind-benders from multiple genres, including: thrillers, science fiction, mysteries, fantasy, the avant garde, surrealism, and even documentaries.  I’ll also be putting up articles focusing on this or that author or director, or making lists of particularly great moments in mind-bending entertainment.

I hope my readers will enjoy exploring the world of mind-benders with me.  Please add your comments, and discuss your views with me.  As often is the case with such entertainment, there’s no “one right answer” to many of the ways I’ll be analyzing these stories.  Share your view, so others can get a different perspective on these great works of mind-bending entertainment!
